How to Repair and Restore Summer Skin
If you’ve spent too much time in the sun this summer, you’ll want to read on... We know, it’s easy to forget our skin basics when there are beach days, afternoon picnics and BBQs to attend – but now that the weather is slowly starting to cool, your skin will likely be crying out for a little attention.
Growing up in Australia’s harsh summers, we often forget about covering our neck and chest so it’s not just the face that will need a little boost.
Here, we talk you through ways to repair and restore sun damage and how to get your skin in the best condition for the months ahead.
Now is the time to focus on feeding your skin with nourishing and hydrating products, such as The Moisturiser, to help keep the skin looking plumper and healthier. It’s also a great time to reintroduce stronger products such as retinol to help repair the damage you may have caused over summer. Retinol increases cell production and collagen stimulation, meaning it’s not only great for anti-ageing and helping to reduce fine lines and wrinkles but also helps with skin discolouration. We love Cosmedix Serum 16 because it’s the only retinol product stocked at The Clinic which is safe on the face, neck and décolletage.
If your skin is looking a little lifeless and/or sun damaged, a combination of a powerful antioxidant, tyrosinase inhibitors and retinol are the best way to help improve sun damage and also minimise risk of further sun damage.
Aspect Dr Active C is a great choice for promoting even, brighter, healthier skin; Cosmedix Simply Brilliant naturally brightens the skin by working deep into the skin cells to correct the cell production process; and we love Define by Cosmedix as our retinol option as this helps to produce healthier and clearer skin cells.
Masks are great to add to your routine once or twice a week. We love the Glow Mask by Cosmedix, which incorporates bamboo extract that exfoliates skin, Niacinamide to enhance skin tone and texture and Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin and promotes anti-ageing benefits.
If you’ve experienced significant moisture loss, Restore Mask by Cosmedix is our recommendation. It incorporates mango seed butter to deeply nourish and moisturise the skin; Sodium Hyaluronate to increase hydration in skin, plumping and prevention of further water loss; and Papaya Fruit Extract, which gently exfoliates the skin for a smoother healthier complexion.
If you’re local to Sydney, then the first thing to do is to book a consultation with our expert team. We can then ascertain the level of damage and recommend a treatment plan specific to both your concerns and goals.
Blueberry Peels are a fantastic way to brighten and hydrate skin that has been neglected over the summer. The rich use of blueberries promotes an anti-inflammatory response and also evens out the skin tone. The inclusion of Lactic Acid helps to soften the glue-like consistency of the dead skin cell layer (epidermis) for instantly brighter skin.
If you’re battling with pigmentation, resurfacing treatments are best for increasing skin cell turnover and removing thickened dead skin cells. IPL uses wavelengths of intense pulsed light to breakup red and brown pigment on the skin - brown being unwanted pigmentation and red being either inflammatory hyperpigmentation post breakouts or capillaries. The wavelength of the light helps even out the surface of the skin.
Fraxel is a fractional laser that is fantastic for resurfacing both the surface of the skin and also into the skin’s dermis for an even deeper resurfacing and collagen stimulating treatment. This is a great option for those who have some deeper, stubborn pigmentation and also great for a general texture resurfacing treatment.
However, it’s not just about the top layer, we need to also consider the strength of our dermal layer too. Protein fibres like collagen and elastin live in this layer of the skin and as UV-A and UV-B rays can damage elasticity, skin tightening treatments such as Ultraformer and Thermage will stimulate pre-existing collagen to remodel and rejuvenate those cells, whilst also stimulating new collagen production. Thickening that structure of our skin promotes a plumper and more youthful look, reversing sun damage.
If you’ve started to notice ageing on your chest and neck, we generally recommend in house treatments combined with a results driven regime at home – although something to remember for next summer is that prevention is key. Think of these two areas as a rubber band, as we age and expose our skin to harmful UV-A and U-B rays this impacts on the skin and slowly we lose further skin elasticity through sun and photo damage, so that tight rubber band stretches and stretches. Due to the natural ageing process we slowly produce less collagen, therefore aiding in further loss of skin elasticity from collagen and elastin.
Serum 16 from Cosmedix is one of the only retinols suitable for the neck and décolletage area and aims to improve skin tone and texture. Intense Firming Complex from Societe is one of the most powerful and highly potent peptide serums available for purchase in Australia and it stimulates collagen, which firms and rejuvenates the skin.
Ultraformer for the neck and the chest is our favourite way to stimulate pre-existing collagen and new collagen production and it promotes a more youthful look whilst preventing and maintaining effects of ageing.
Fraxel once again, is the powerhouse in skin resurfacing, improving appearance of even skin tone and further stimulating collagen for improving skin texture.
Always remember that skincare doesn’t stop at the face, you need to work right down to the décolletage. Using suitable retinols and advanced peptide serums as mentioned above alongside sun protection (every single day) is the best and most effective way to improve and reverse signs of ageing.
