Treating acne scarring with Fraxel

Treating acne scarring with Fraxel

Bubbly School Teacher Marisa Tyras has been one of our favourite clients at The Clinic for the past six years. While you would never know it by looking at her, Marisa used to have severe adolescent acne and came to The Clinic seeking treatment for deep, visible acne scarring across her cheeks and forehead. Read on to discover Marisa’s skin journey, including how she drastically reduced her acne scarring with Fraxel, and see what happened when she had a Fraxel treatment LIVE on our Instagram.

MARISA’S STORY

The Clinic client Marisa has been affected by severe acne since the age of 12. While she eventually managed to clear up her breakouts by taking Roaccutane, the medication left her with red, irritable and cracked skin. Years of suffering with severe acne also left Marisa with deep, visible and painful scarring which, as a young woman, really affected her confidence and general approach to life.

I wouldnt ever post a photo on Instagram without a filter, I wouldnt go on a date without wearing makeup, it made me really self conscious, explains Marisa.

MARISA’S SKIN CONCERNS

Marisa first came to see us at The Clinic six years ago seeking treatment to address her deep acne scarring. Having managed her severe adolescent acne after three years on prescribed medication, her next step was to try to reduce the visible acne scarring occurring across most of her face, particularly her cheeks and forehead. While the acne itself had mostly cleared by then, the noticeable scarring was a daily reminder, badly affecting Marisa’s confidence in social situations. It was at this point that Marisa decided to explore the Fraxel Laser treatment.

WHAT IS FRAXEL?

Fraxel is a fractional laser treatment, a non-invasive laser therapy that penetrates the epidermis, targeting deeper layers of the skin with long lasting results. Microscopic laser beams treat a single column of skin at a time and mimic an injury to the skin, stimulating the body to go through its natural healing process. This causes the existing collagen fibres to contract and stimulate the production of new collagen, tissues and cells, resulting in smoother skin. Fraxel is known as a highly effective treatment for pigmentation, discolouration, freckles, sun spots, age spots and acne scarring.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF FRAXEL?

Fraxel offers a range of benefits to your skin tone, texture and appearance, including:

  • Dramatic improvement and repair in skin tone
  • Softening of lines and wrinkles
  • Reduction of damage caused by the sun or scarring
  • Helps to firm and tighten loose skin when performed on the neck
  • Reduces crepey skin, sun damage and discolouration when performed on the chest

WHO IS FRAXEL SUITABLE FOR?

Fraxel is ideal for someone with sun damage or acne scarring who believes the texture of their skin is not as smooth as it could be, and for those who want some collagen stimulation. It is ideal for someone who has tried IPL or Skin Needling and wants to take the next step in deeper skin resurfacing.

Fraxel is not suitable for sensitive or red skin types (IPL is great for these instead), hormonal pigmentation such as Melasma (SkinPen is a good alternative), and lastly darker Fitzpatrick skin types who risk Hyperpigmentation from the treatment. It is also not suitable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

MARISA’S PRODUCT REGIME

Marisa cleansing

During her more severe acne period, Marisa used very mild, non-abrasive products such as The Cleansing Pad by The Clinic to remove makeup, Cosmedix Benefit Clean for gentle cleansing, and Aspect Dr Redless to nourish her skin and soothe inflammation. The aim was to clean and hydrate her skin without irritating Marisa’s pimples and to manage the dryness caused by her medication.

Once Marisa had finished her course of acne medication, she wanted to maintain her clear skin with an effective product regime. She used Cosmedix Purity Detox Scrub to exfoliate, Cosmedix Elite X-Cell to reduce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation caused by breakouts, and Cosmedix Rescue Hydrating Balm and Mask to soothe her dry, irritated skin.

Recently we introduced a new product kit ideal for those like Marisa who suffer from acne and breakouts – the Acne Starter Kit. This handy at-home kit contains a selection of active formulas in a simple three step skincare regime ideal for combating acne, breakouts and congested skin.

WHAT WERE THE RESULTS OF MARISA’S TREATMENTS?

The journey to clear, smooth skin is not a quick fix, it can take weeks or even months to resolve. Our Clinic team developed a skincare product and treatment regime to support the intense acne prescription medication Marisa was taking. Once she had completed her medication, they sought to reduce the skin damage and scarring which had occured, primarily using the Fraxel Laser treatment.

After a series of Fraxel treatments and Peels over an extended period of time, Marisa’s scarring is now almost entirely gone. These days she is feeling very happy with her skin and confident in her role as a teacher and role model to young girls.
