How Skin Changes In Your 50s + What You Can Do About It

How Skin Changes In Your 50s + What You Can Do About It

During the 50s, the effects of ageing that have occurred throughout the 30s and 40s continue, and with the hormonal changes of menopause, occur at a faster rate. Clients may experience loose or sagging skin on the face and neck or hooding of the eyes. A lack of estrogen in the body causes skin to become dry and thin as collagen production is at its lowest. Facial definition is lost and lines become deeper.

Sarah, 58 first came to The Clinic at the request of her daughter to try a Blueberry Peel. We asked her to share some details about her skin, how it's changed since turning 50 and her approach to anti-ageing.

“I feel my skin is a lot more hydrated, which in turn makes me feel more confident and I feel good about my skin at my age.”

Skin Laxity (Loose Skin)

The predominant concern of clients in their 50s is skin laxity, loose skin. Lack of collagen and estrogen production in the body impacts on the firmness of skin, resulting in sagginess and deepening wrinkles around the eyes, mouth, nasolabial folds and jawline. This is further impacted by changes in facial structure and volume loss. As we age, fat pads in the face descend, ligaments and tendons stretch, creating a more U-shape in the face rather than a youthful V-shape.

“I don’t mind the fine lines and the ‘crinkles’ around the eyes. The thing that I’ve really battled with is the falling.”

What You Can Do About It

Cosmetic Injections are particularly beneficial in the 50s to create a more defined structure to the face. Whilst this is a divisive topic for some, at The Clinic we have over 20 years’ experience and will work with you to devise a treatment plan to ensure a natural result. Specifically for the 50’s age group, we specialise in a mid-face lifting technique using Dermal Fillers.

Dermal Fillers for mid-face lifting are a non-surgical, non-invasive option to restore facial volume loss caused by ageing. Dermal Fillers help to achieve a more defined appearance by lifting through the mid face, sculpting the cheek, chin or jaw lines and softening nasolabial folds or jowls. Dermal fillers allow greater precision in wrinkle correction and can effectively treat medium to deep wrinkles, at depths which other methods cannot.

To stimulate collagen production, we recommend Thermage FLX, which is our most advanced skin tightening treatment to combat loose or sagging skin. Using radiofrequency (RF) technology, Thermage FLX works deep in the layers of the skin to remodel existing collagen and produce new collagen. While laser treatments and other radiofrequency procedures also work to tighten the skin, no other treatment heats as deeply as Thermage FLX.

“Recently I had a Thermage treatment at The Clinic… even a week later I can notice a difference and I’m quite excited to see what it will look like in 3-6 months when I’ll see the full benefit.”

Dryness, Thinning & Sensitivity

Skin dryness continues to worsen in the 50s as oil production decreases. As menopause depletes estrogen in the body this causes continual loss of elastin, collagen and hyaluronic. Dryness decreases pressure in the skin tissue, therefore creating thinner skin. This is also linked to more sensitive skin or increased redness. It’s important to reassess your skin care routine as the more active ingredients like AHA and BHA acids may cause more harm than good.

What You Can Do About It

A healthy diet with good fats and a quality product regime can assist with skin hydration from the inside and out. At The Clinic, we only work with 'Cosmeceutical' products; these are cosmetic products that contain active ingredients in higher concentrations. When applied topically to the skin, active ingredients penetrate more deeply and are clinically proven to produce better results that over the counter ‘cosmetics’.

I find I really do need hydrating products – The Moisturiser and Cosmedix Rescue. I come in at night once I’ve applied those and my skin feels restored.”

The Moisturiser by The Clinic

The key active ingredients to incorporate in the 50s are Hyaluronic Acid to increase hydration within the skin tissue and prevent surface level water loss; and Peptides to firm the skin and boost elasticity. Use a nourishing moisturiser every morning and night and add in a face mask 1-3 times a week for extra hydration when you need it. We recommend:

Skin Thickening

Whilst some clients notice skin thinning, on the contrary some experience thickening of the skin likened to that of an 'orange peel'. This is due to a process of glycation, which is a build up of sugar molecules in the skin cells, making the skin look and feel thicker. Sun damage can be a big contributor to this also.

What You Can Do About It

Incorporating Retinol (Vitamin A) into your regime will help to break up the thicker cells and smooth the surface of the skin. Retinol is an ingredient that increases cellular and collagen production. You will hear a lot about this ingredient as it is considered the powerhouse for anti-ageing.

As its name suggests, our Timeless Retinol Peel $250 is jam packed with Retinol and Lactic Acid to combat the signs of ageing.

Be careful when choosing a Retinol product for at home use. Retinol is a complex ingredient that can be irritating, so it's vital you use the formula suited to your skin to avoid irritation. View Retinol Products
