Revive and Rehydrate with These Summer Essentials
Let’s face it. Summer is practically over already, and if you’re anything like The Clinic team, your skin is probably looking a little worse for wear by now. Months of beach time, sunscreen, fake tan and festive cheer (read: alcohol!) can wreak havoc with your skin, causing dryness, excess oil, sun damage or unexplained breakouts. Not to mention the maskne factor. If your skin is showing up all those summer party sins and more, it’s time to give it some much needed love. Read on for our best tips to revive and rehydrate summer weary skin.
CLEANSE AND REFRESH
It goes without saying that regular cleansing is essential to maintaining clear, healthy skin. A good quality cosmeceutical cleanser should already form a part of your daily skincare regime. If you aren’t sure where to start, some of our Clinic favourites include Benefit Clean by Cosmedix and Aspect Dr Deep Clean, or Aspect Dr Mild Clean, for those with more sensitive skin. Of course, summer heat makes cleansing even more important to remove sweat, sunscreen and impurities on the skin. In addition to a proper cleanse morning and evening, we recommend keeping a jar of Cleansing Pads by Scott + Sullivan on hand. These gentle wipes are ideal for a quick cleanse on-the-go, particularly before or after wearing a face mask to reduce the likelihood of mask-related breakouts.
DEEP CLEAN YOUR PORES
Pores. Small but mighty, these tiny openings in the skin release oils and sweat, and if clogged, can result in pesky breakouts. It doesn’t take much for pores to become blocked with a combination of sunscreen, sweat, and extra oil on your skin in summer. Unfortunately, wearing a mask traps all of this on your skin, along with moisture and bacteria, making it all worse! Thankfully, there are simple remedies to a blocked pore situation, from regular cleansing and exfoliation to using oil-free products.
To target pores with a specialist treatment, we recommend the Société Clear Skin Boosting Pads, containing AHAs and BHAs to minimise pores, improve problem skin and reduce oily shine. If you enjoy a bit of at-home masking, try the Cosmedix Detox Activated Charcoal Mask, containing a mixture of clay and charcoal to draw out impurities, decongest skin and unclog pores.
EXFOLIATE AND DECONGEST
To ensure optimum hydration and manage dry summer skin, it’s important that you exfoliate to remove dead skin cells and debris. Exfoliating regularly allows moisturisers and serums to penetrate the skin properly, ensuring you receive the full benefits of any active ingredients. To maintain a fresh and clear complexion, we recommend using the Société Superfruit Enzyme Exfoliator 1-2 times a week to shift impurities and detoxify the skin.
REHYDRATE YOUR SKIN
If you are guilty of indulging in a little too much sun, fake tan or *cough* champagne, you may have noticed your skin is looking super dehydrated lately. The party season takes its toll on our skin and the fallout can be dryness, flakiness, or overall dehydration. Our go-to product to remedy dehydrated summer skin is the Aspect Hydrating Mask. Packed with Shea Butter and essential Vitamins, this rich Antioxidant mask is the ultimate rehab for dry, stressed skin.
Another favourite for an instant moisture boost is the Société Rejuvenating Peptide Gel Mask. This popular sheet mask contains anti-ageing Peptides and soothing Chamomile, reducing redness and puffiness while delivering deep hydration for a long-lasting dewy complexion. To de-puff tired party weary eyes, opt for the Société Eye Peptide Gel Mask, offering an instant cooling effect while minimising dark circles, puffiness and fine lines.
SOOTHE & REPAIR SUN DAMAGE
While it’s not ideal, it is pretty easy to pick up an unwanted sunburn in a country as sunny as ours. Even overcast days can deliver a very nasty burn. Although prevention is better than cure, and sunburn is really bad news for your skin, there are those times when we just get caught out. To cover you in such a skincare emergency, we recommend the Aspect Dr Soothing Gel. Containing soothing Chamomile and Aloe Vera, this cooling gel comforts stressed skin, minimising redness and calming the skin.
If your pigmentation has flared up after too many sunny days, and you have been left with a lot of extra freckles and dark patches, a brightening serum is the way to go. Targeting all signs of pigmentation and discolouration, the PCA Skin Vitamin B3 Brightening Serum works to combat the appearance of dark spots, dullness, and redness. Another option for unwanted pigmentation would be the Société Brightening Serum, ideal for anti-ageing, discolouration and overall skin brightening.
